Chapter Four

Zander waited at the rickety old sign of the ranch he spoke to the agent about a few days ago. Once upon a time, the ranch’s name was Last Chance. For Zander, the ranch signified a new beginning, much like the relationship that was developing between him, John, and Dean.

The three of them spent the next couple of days together after the night of sex so unimaginably hot. Zander revisited each moment they shared numerous times since. A lot was on the line all of a sudden for Zander—his heart and the ranch. He took in the expanse before him and inhaled a deep breath. It would be disappointing to come this far and receive bad news.

According to the agent, the place had been on the market for some time. No offers had been made thus far, and since the agent didn’t personally represent the current owners, he shared with Zander the fact they were eager to sell. The day before on the phone, Zander put in an offer lower than the asking price and kept his fingers crossed. He needed a manageable payment and hoped to have enough funds left over to make improvements and buy a few head of cattle with as well.

“Mr. Wesley,” the agent greeted him through his open window when he pulled up and parked, “I have great news.” He stepped out and extended his hand. “The owners accepted your offer. Now all that’s left is the bank.”

“That is great news, Mr. Young.” Zander smiled, but was still worried. “Come on, I have the keys to the place so you take a look around.” Mr. Young unlocked the gate and slung it open. “I’ll follow you.”

Zander drove up the bumpy drive toward the house and tried to dodge as many potholes as possible. Dingo was precious cargo, and as soon as he parked he planned on letting the poor guy out to munch on some fresh grass. As he neared the house, Zander realized that Mr. Young had been upfront with what he said about the place. From a distance, the house had seen better days, but upon closer inspection, he decided it was a complete wreck.

“The house, like I said, is in bad shape,” Mr. Young called as he stepped out of his truck. “The only redeeming quality of this place is its size and fresh running streams.”

Zander opened the trailer after he first unhooked Dingo through the front compartment. Dingo backed out on his own and whinnied with agreement. The horse wasn’t like any other. That was for sure.

“Don’t you need to tie him up?” Mr. Young blinked in confusion. “No, he’ll come when I whistle for him,” Zander replied. He began walking toward the house to see if he could at least live there for a little while until he could build another place.

“Amazing.” Mr. Young followed and tripped over a rock, stumbling for a moment while still staring at Dingo with disbelief.

Zander chuckled and continued on.

Mr. Young climbed the stairs ahead of Zander and unlocked the front door.
